We took an evening flight from Amsterdam to Nairobi, which
felt much longer than our previous flight (which it was). By the end of this leg of the trip, all we
really wanted was to stretch out and sleep in a bed rather than a semi reclined
seat on a plane. Nevertheless, it could
have been worse and when all was said and done, it was a fairly good
flight. Nairobi airport gave us a couple
hours to sit and talk as a group, and to change out of the clothes that most of
us had been wearing for almost three days.
The last leg of the journey, which took us into Lilongwe was
also the shortest – a nice relaxing morning flight. In Lilongwe we met the last four members of
our team, which made us a team 18 (11 people in Lilongwe and 7 up at
Mzuzu). Once we gathered up our luggage (only 2 people
had delayed luggage) and arranged the transportation, we traveled about 20
minutes by minibus into town. The 11
people that are living in Lilongwe traveled to their house, which we have
nicknamed ‘The Palace,’ as it is suitable for accommodating the 11 people and
is complete with a gate and a high brick wall with barbed wire. The remaining 7 of us, who are living in
Mzuzu stayed at Mufasa’s Backpackers for
a couple of nights before making the trip up to our new home away from
home. I was a bit nervous at first about
staying in a hostel for a few nights (mostly because I had never done so
before, and this is really my first time traveling internationally) but it was
a relaxing and enjoyable couple of days – most importantly, it had working
showers! As a side note for all you Lion
King fans out there, Mufasa means quaint.
